Sludge and slurry pumps are specialised machines designed to pump high volumes of thick and abrasive waste fluids through a discharge pipe. This type of pump differs from other liquid pumps as they are made of stronger, abrasion resistant materials specifically designed to withstand liquids that are highly solid-laden, viscous or corrosive. They also contain sacrificial parts that are designed to be easily replaced periodically or when worn out. This improves the overall performance of the pump and reduces accelerated wear leading to premature failure resulting in the whole pump needing to be replaced.

Sludge and slurry pumps come in two classifications, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps. Centrifugal slurry pumps use a rotating impeller to create suction that draws the material into the pump housing which is then discharged. Positive displacement slurry pumps use pistons, chambers or gears to draw fixed volumes of liquid through the pump. Both classifications of sludge and slurry pumps utilise large flow paths to minimise potential clogging and blockages from occurring while in operation.

These specialty pumps are used in a variety of industrial applications. Typical applications include quarrying, mining, building, farming as well as sewage, trash and industrial waste removal.
