The maximum penalty for selling, importing, hiring or exchanging 'Declared items' without 'Electrical Safety Approvals Marks' and an Australian Certificate of Approval is $82,500 and/or 2 years jail for individuals or $825,000 for Corporations.
It is important to note that overseas Certificates of Approval and approval marks, such as CE mark, CCC, CSA and UL are not acceptable in Australia.

A recent notice from the Electrical Safety Office
Dear Responsible Supplier,
Recent electrical equipment recalls are a good reminder for responsible suppliers of the importance to have Quality Assurance(QA) systems in place for the electrical equipment they supply.
Appropriate QA processes could include batch testing, inspection and checking of products against the test reports to ensure equipment is manufactured in line with the original testing and certification.
Good QA helps prevent non-compliant products reaching the market place and give an early warning for products already in the market. If you do not have this expertise in-house, there are private companies that can assist you.
In addition to on-going equipment checks, suppliers should consider marking their products with batch code, date code, serial number markings or other such marking to assist in identifying product. That way if a safety fault is found, and a recall is required, it can be limited to the affected batches and not all the supplied product. This could save time, money and reputation.
As a responsible supplier, you are reminded that it is a legislative requirement to ensure all in-scope electrical equipment supplied is electrically safe.
Did you know that you are required to have accredited testing as a part of any VEET/IPART applications?
